Biography

Joaquim Mullol, MD, PhD, is Director of the Rhinology Unit & Smell Clinic, Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Hospital Clínic Barcelona. He is also a Professor of Research, Head of the Laboratory of Clinical and Experimental Respiratory Immunoallergy at the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (FRCB-IDIBAPS), and Head of the Research Group at the Biomedical Research Network on Respiratory Diseases (CIBERES), Carlos III Institute of Health, in Barcelona.  

Prof. Mullol’s research focuses on the mechanisms of action of upper airway inflammation with a special interest in United/Global Airway Diseases, impact of rhinitis and chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps in patient’s quality of life, corticosteroid resistance, aspirin/NSAID-exacerbated respiratory disease, sinonasal epithelium and stem/progenitor cell biology, and in the pathophysiology of the sense of smell and regeneration of olfactory neuroepithelium. 

Prof. Mullol has served in leadership positions for the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI), including Secretary and Chairman of the ENT Section. He currently serves on the executive committees for the MACVIA-ARIA Sentinel Network (MASK), the European Position Paper on Rhinosinusitis and Nasal Polyps (EPOS), the Global Allergy and Asthma European Network (GALEN), the European Center for Allergy Research Foundation (ECARF), and on the Scientific Committee of European Forum for Research and Education in Allergy and Airway Diseases (EUFOREA). 

Prof. Mullol has co-authored more than 320 peer-reviewed original articles and more than 200 review papers and guidelines (including EPOS, MASK, GALEN, and others) in international scientific journals. He is also a globally recognized speaker, often serving as faculty or panelist at national and international scientific congresses and meetings. He is the Rhinosinusitis Section Editor for Current Allergy and Asthma Reports and Editor-in-Chief for Current Treatment Options in Allergy, as well as a member of the editorial boards for several other scientific journals including Rhinology, International Forum of Allergy and Rhinology, and the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice
