Learning objectives

  • Understand the shared underlying pathomechanism manifesting in chronic signs and symptoms of two very distinct disease
  • Recall the latest research on itch pathophysiology and the neuro-immune mechanisms that drive the unique disease characteristics of PN and CSU

Description

ADVENT hosted an engaging educational symposium in San Diego on March 10, 2024, where Drs. Sarina Elmariah, Brian Kim, and Martin Metz explored how two very distinct diseases with seemingly unrelated clinical features can share an underlying pathomechanism manifesting in chronic signs and symptoms. In the context of prurigo nodularis (PN) and chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU), the presenters showcased the latest research on itch pathophysiology and the neuro-immune mechanisms that drive their unique disease characteristics. The expert panel explored new pathways and how type 2 inflammatory cytokines interact with the nerves and surrounding tissue milieu, perpetuating the chronic itch and lesion formation characteristic of both PN and CSU and mechanistically linking these two distinct skin diseases.
