Joshua B. Wechsler, MD, MSCI, is an attending physician in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition at Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago in Chicago, IL, where he is also the Campaign Urging Research for Eosinophilic Diseases (CURED) Foundation Research Scholar and medical director of the Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Diseases Program. In addition, he is an assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Medicine at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago.
Dr Wechsler earned his MD degree from Rush University in Chicago. He completed a residency in pediatrics at the Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, IN, and a clinical fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, affiliated with Northwestern University. He completed a master of science in clinical investigation at The Graduate School of Northwestern University.
As a physician-scientist, Dr Wechsler has devoted his career to understanding the pathogenesis of eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders, notably eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) and eosinophilic gastritis. He seeks to improve outcomes for patients with these conditions, and his publications have contributed to further defining EoE natural history, treatment outcomes, clinical phenotypes, and metrics. The primary focus of his current research is on mechanisms of mast cell activation that contribute to mucosal barrier disruption in EoE, fibrostenosis, treatment outcomes, and comorbidities, such as hypermobility and dysautonomia.
Dr Wechsler’s professional society memberships include the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition; the American Gastroenterological Association; and the Society for Pediatric Research.
