Biography

Guy Brusselle, MD, PhD, is Head of the Department of Respiratory Medicine at Ghent University Hospital and Professor of Medicine at Ghent University. Prof. Brusselle received his medical degree at Ghent University in 1990. Investigating the functional role of cytokines interleukin-4 (IL-4) and interleukin-5 (IL-5) in allergic asthma, he obtained his PhD in 1997. As a respiratory physician with a keen clinical and scientific interest in asthma, severe asthma, and COPD, he joined the Ghent University Hospital in 2002. Since 2008, he has been a Professor of Medicine at Ghent University, teaching the courses “Study Design” and “Respiratory Medicine” to medical students.

Prof. Brusselle is a Fellow of the European Respiratory Society (ERS) and has served as head of the ERS Science Council and Guidelines Director. He is a founding member of the Respiratory Effectiveness Group and an active member of other professional societies, including the American Thoracic Society as a member of the Documents Development and Implementation Committee and the Belgian Respiratory Society. 

Prof. Brusselle was awarded the Prometheus Prize for Scientific Research by Ghent University in 2016. He has sat on the editorial boards for Lancet Respiratory Medicine and the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. He has published more than 450 papers in international peer-reviewed medical journals. 

Since September 2017, Prof. Brusselle has been a member of the Scientific Committee of the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA), and he has since joined the Board of Directors of GINA. Since January 2022, he has been President of the Belgian Respiratory Society.
