Carolina Gutiérrez Junquera, MD, PhD, is an associate professor of Pediatrics at the Universidad Autónoma of Madrid, Spain, and a consultant pediatric gastroenterologist at University Hospital Puerta de Hierro Majadahonda in Madrid. Prof Gutiérrez Junquera’s clinical and research efforts have been dedicated to celiac disease and eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), with a particular focus on the epidemiology of pediatric EoE; the efficacy and underlying mechanisms of proton pump inhibitors and other medical and dietary therapies; and the clinical and therapeutic aspects of non-EoE EGIDs.
She is a member of the Gastroenterology Committee of the European Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) and currently serves as secretary of the ESPGHAN Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Diseases Working Group. In these roles, Prof Gutiérrez Junquera has contributed to multiple collaborative research projects and clinical guidelines, including the updated management guidelines for pediatric EoE and the joint NASPGHAN-ESPGHAN guidelines on gastrointestinal eosinophilic diseases beyond EoE. As part of the Gastroenterology Committee, she is actively promoting further research and education in this field.
Prof Gutiérrez Junquera is the author or co-author of numerous peer-reviewed publications, including the Cochrane review on the medical management of EoE, developed in collaboration with international colleagues from the United Kingdom and the United States. She currently coordinates the EGID Working Group of the Spanish Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition and serves as the principal investigator of the Spanish Registry of Pediatric EoE.
