Biography

Alvar Agusti, MD, PhD, is Professor of Medicine at the University of Barcelona, where he received his own training in respiratory medicine. After completing his medical training, Prof. Agusti served as a visiting Fogarty Scholar (NIH) at the University of Chicago. 

Prof. Agusti was Director of the Pulmonary Division in Hospital Son Dureta from 1991 until 2009, and Director of the Respiratory Institute at Hospital Clinic in Barcelona from 2009 until 2021. He is Chair of the Board of Directors and a member of the Scientific Committee of the Global Initiative for Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD). He founded and served as the first Director of the National Spanish Network of Excellence in Respiratory Research (CIBERES). 

Prof. Agusti has been elected full member to two National Academies of Medicine, both in Mallorca and Barcelona, and is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and an honorary member of the Spanish (SEPAR) and European (ERS) respiratory societies.
