Fernando Martinez
Fernando J. Martinez, MD, MS, is a professor in the division of pulmonary medicine and interim chair of the department of medicine at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School in Worchester, Massachusetts. There, Dr Martinez also holds the positions of Joseph D. Early chair in biomedical research, vice chair of clinical and translational research, executive director of the department of medicine’s Clinical Research Core, and academic chief of the division of pulmonary, allergy, and critical care medicine.
Biography
Fernando J. Martinez, MD, MS, is a professor in the division of pulmonary medicine and interim chair of the department of medicine at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School in Worchester, Massachusetts. There, Dr Martinez also holds the positions of Joseph D. Early chair in biomedical research, vice chair of clinical and translational research, executive director of the department of medicine’s Clinical Research Core, and academic chief of the division of pulmonary, allergy, and critical care medicine.
Dr Martinez completed his medical degree at the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville, Florida, and also earned a master of science degree in biostatistics & clinical study design from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Supplementary to his education, he performed a residency at Beth Israel Hospital and a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Boston University, both located in Boston, Massachusetts.
Dr Martinez’s primary research interests currently surround the translation of therapeutic approaches in cancer care, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and interstitial lung disease—particularly idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. In line with his research, Dr Martinez has participated in the authoring of over 700 publications and has served as principal investigator for multiple National Institutes of Health–funded projects and trials including precision trials and studies aiming to utilize genetic and molecular biomarkers to improve the diagnostic approach for fibrosing interstitial lung disease. Additionally, Dr Martinez is active as the editor-in-chief for the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
Dr Martinez is a member of the American College of Chest Physicians, American Thoracic Society, European Respiratory Society, and American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. Additionally, he serves on the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease’s board of directors and science committee.
