André Moreira, MD, PhD, is director of immunoallergology services, executive member of the directive board, and director of the medical residence training program at the University Hospital of São João in Porto, Portugal. He is also full professor in the faculty of medicine and assistant professor of immunology in the faculty of nutrition and food sciences at the hospital’s affiliated university, the University of Porto.
Dr Moreira received his medical degree and completed a postgraduate internship at the University of Porto, where he earned his PhD in conjunction with the University of Helsinki in Helsinki, Finland.
Dr Moreira’s research interests center around nonpharmacological interventions in allergy and asthma, which include the impact of obesity, diet, and physical activity on asthma control; links between neurogenic inflammation, obesity, and asthma; the development of breath-based biomarkers such as exhaled miRNAs and volatile organic compounds for the diagnosis and monitoring of asthma; and exploring the role of urban environmental factors in the development of asthma and allergy. In pursuit of these interests, Dr Moreira has authored or coauthored over 180 indexed manuscripts and participated in the publication of multiple books and book chapters. In addition, he has acted as the editor-in-chief of the Porto Biomedical Journal for over 10 years and has served as peer-reviewer for 18 journals.
Dr Moreira is president of the supervisory council of the Order of Nutritionists and vice president for congresses of the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. Additionally, he is a member of the Portuguese Medical Association, Portuguese Society of Allergology and Clinical Immunology, and Portuguese Society of Pneumology.
